What is Hexahydrocannabinol? HHC Effects, 3Chi HHC Carts
Due to the succes and recent illicit state legislations targeting delta 8 THC as a legal alternative to the to traditional Delta 9 THC, the hemp industry has sought other less-known cannabinoids to compete in the diverse cannabis world. A new favorite is sky-rocketing: hexahydrocannabinol, usually known as HHC. We’ve touched on HHC in the past but want to revisit this magical cannabinoid as it gains popularity.
What is HHC (hexahydrocannabinol)?
HHC is a THC relatively long known to science, but until recently not often discussed by cannabis users. HHC is a minor cannabinoid; it occurs naturally in cannabis but in amounts too small to make extraction cost-effective. Since commercial production of HHC is in it’s early stages so it’s still not widely known.
Majority of cannabinoids can be converted to other siblings by altering the molecular structure and chemistry of the molecules. Like delta 6 THC and delta 10 THC, HHC is made from hemp-derived plants (not cannabis) in a lab through chemical processes. This is so HHC remains legal, as it is Federally Compliant with the 2018 Farm Bill. HHC has manufactuers and consumers excited additionally for a major reason; unlike delta 8 and delta 10 – HHC it isn’t called THC. This has the legality in an entire new arena compared to other recently attacked derivatives.
What Method is HHC produced?
Hexahydrocannabinol was discovered in the 1940s by chemist Roger Adams. He created HHC by adding hydrogen to the THC molecule and altering its physical properties. The process, called hydrogenation, is first described in a 1947 patent document.
Hydrogenation modifies the structure of delta 9 THC by replacing a double bond with two hydrogen atoms, which changes its molecular weight and also makes it more stable. According to Mark Scialdone, a chemist and BR Brands Chief Science Officer, hydrogenation improves “stability and resistance to thermo-oxidative breakdown”—which means HHC has a longer shelf life and is less prone to damage caused by UV light and heat.
Hexahydrocannabinol Side Effects & Euphoria?
As with all substances, especially new ones, this is debated as it varies between individuals. HHC isn’t technically a THC, but its similarity does induce similar effects, especially in sufficient doses. Due to lab production manufacturing of HHC, current batches are a mix of active and inactive HHC molecules. The active HHC has a strong affinity with our body’s cannabinoid receptors; however inactive ones don’t.
Manufacturers are still working on a more cost-effective way to method to extract high-potency HHC from low-potency hemp plants. This means the mainstream HHC—a mixture of both forms is many times not ideal for the buyer. Use caution when picking our HHC distillates, gummies, HHC disposable vapes and more. Hexahydrocannabinol contains vibrant effects. Consumers report Hexahydrocannabinol effects to be stronger than Delta 8 THC and more stimulating; however not as strong as cannabis Delta 9 THC which can induce paranoia, anxiety and uncomfortable side effects.
Currently, everything published regarding HHC’s effects as well as the side effects are based on consumer reports. Many THC siblings due have a similarity with certain side effects such as anxiety, dry mouth, dry red eyes, as well as increased appetite and in rare cases insomia.
Will HHC show up in a drug test?
A recent study suggested that delta-11-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) may have some interesting effects on the body when it is ingested. There has been a lot of research on the effects of delta-9, which is what we normally think of as the THCs, but this new study focused on delta-11. It may be possible that this form of THC could be used to treat medical conditions such as chronic pain or even cancer.
It appears that HHC may not break down in the body in the same way as THC. Unlike the delta-8, delta-9, and delta-10 forms of THC, there is some evidence that HHC doesn’t metabolize into 11-hydroxy-THC, which is the breakdown substance many drug panels tests for.
But that hasn’t been studied and isn’t certain. So far, no one knows for sure that HHC won’t leave evidence of use in your blood, urine or hair. If your employer tests for drug use, we suggest you not risk your job by using HHC.
Does HHC have medical benefits?
HHC (hexahydrocannabinol) is a lesser-known cannabinoid found in marijuana, but it may have some promising health benefits.
While it hasn’t been studied as thoroughly as delta 9 THC or CBD, it has shown promise in some studies. One study from 2011 showed that synthetic analogs of HHC “strongly inhibited breast cancer cell-induced angiogenesis and tumor growth.” Researchers in Japan published a paper in 2007 suggesting HHC’s pain-blocking capability was significant. However, we’re still early in the game when it comes to studying HHC and its potential benefits.
Is HHC legal and will it stay legal?
When the 2018 Farm Bill federally legalized hemp and its derivatives, we thought we’d seen the end of the battle. But even though hemp-derived cannabinoids (HHC) should be legal at a federal level, there’s still a chance that they could be considered illegal if the THC concentration is above 0.3%.
How can this be? Aren’t all hemp-derived cannabinoids completely legal, since they don’t contain any THC? The answer is yes and no: while it’s true that cannabinoids like CBD are non-psychoactive and therefore legal in most states, products containing them do still have to adhere to the .3% THC rule. While THC isn’t supposed to be included in HHC products, sometimes it shows up as a result of contamination from other parts of the plant that are still illegal—like stems, leaves, and seeds.
